Are School Assignments Worthy?
Imagine an 11-year-old spending his whole day from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. wondering and worrying about school homework all the time. It becomes more stressful when it is not done. Well, this I what my life looks like. Hello, everyone I am Parv, a student in grade 6. I am squeezed under the burden of school assignments all the time. Teachers give us assignments every day in Hindi, English, Maths, Science, and German. I write in all these subjects’ classes when the teachers are explaining. I have to forcibly write 5-6 pages of Question Answers at home after coming back, every day. Ahh !!! there is no breathing space. God help me…I don’t intend to do homework still I do it with no interest and no enthusiasm. I dread it. My hands hurt.
Few of you would say assignments make you revise or understand the concept better or secure good marks in examinations. Well, let me tell you a reality. It’s a myth. Let me tell you a secret, teachers don’t even check the assignments properly. Recently, on 18th Jan 2023, I gave my Hindi test. In this test, I answered a question with the same content that was approved by my teacher in the assignment which I submitted. You will be surprised to know that in the test, she marked it as an incomplete answer. What was the use of the assignment she gave? I would like to ask you all. Is it important to give assignments that children do out of compulsion? Assignments do no good to us. They kill the joy of learning. I am a perfect example of it. Leonardo Da Vinci, the notable Italian artist, and engineer once said –“Learning never exhausts the mind.”. Though my mind, hands, fingers, and back are not only exhausted but are worn out now.
I request teachers and school authorities to ignite the love for learning among children. I urge teachers to change their teaching methodology. Please make it fun, experiential, and long-lasting. For example, classroom teaching can be fun if there are questions to ponder over. It can be imaginative if a difficult concept is taught through a story. Instead of assignments how about a puzzle game or quiz session on the subject matter? If teachers want, they can make our home time free for family and friends. We can play at home and not be bothered about incomplete homework. Another option could be that they can reduce the syllabus. This can help the students to learn concepts through repetition. Teachers won’t rush to complete the syllabus and they wouldn’t bombard us with assignments.
We are tender children. We need time to breathe fresh air instead of breathing worry and anxiety about not finishing our assignments. The tender hands of an 11-year-old like me ache after writing 60 pages a day. Teachers, please have mercy on us. As I don’t intend to spend the rest of my academic life worrying about incomplete assignments from 7.30 am to 9 pm. I am sure if it continues it will soon seep into my dreams as well. To conclude, I would like to bring the attention of teachers to what Plutarch, the notable Greek philosopher once said, “The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be ignited.”. Teachers, please ignite that fire for learning.
