An original story, written by our offline (Jaipur) student Harshil Katiyar.

Harshil is 10-year-old young writer and orator from Jaipur. He loves music, performance, and football. We are proud to have him as a student in the Public Speaking & Creative Writing Through Applied Storytelling & Theatre Program in Jaipur under the mentorship of Trainer Khusshbo Chokhaani. We congratulate Harshil for this exemplary true self-expression.

The River

In the freezing streets of Kashmir, people were cold. Bonfires were being lit, and heaters were being turned on. The temperature was below freezing. The biting cold made it hard to live. The snow covered the trees. The crisp and blistery wind blew everywhere. The road was icy. Frosty and snow-white snow was falling everywhere, to soon be unsullied by cars and people.

In all this bleak weather, Raman was sitting in his room with the heaters on. The subzero temperature was unbearable for him. He was a slim boy and was a very fast runner. He was also very intelligent and clever. His eyes were blue and he had curly and blonde hair. He was a young boy, but he was well-built. He lived by himself in a small hut. He also loved animals very much.

He used to go shoveling snow every day so he could earn some money to buy food. He was very hardworking. On his way, he would always see a glistening river flowing down the snowy mountain. His dream was to cross this river. He always wondered what was on the other side of this chilly river.

The problem was that he did not have any type of gear or equipment for the bone-chilling waters. He would not swim, because then he would simply freeze to death. He did not have enough money to buy a boat. Whush! Whushhhh! Said the water. Perhaps Raman would borrow a boat from someone or make enough money to buy a boat someday.

One day, he was shoveling some snow off the road and spotted something near the hill. He had never seen it before, so he decided to investigate. He went near it and… It was a boat! Someone had left it or abandoned it. Just to make sure someone had abandoned it; Raman came the next day and the boat was still there. This meant that he could finally cross the river. But first, he had to know how to use it. He did not have a trainer, so he practiced by himself daily and eventually got the hang of it.

Some days later, he came back to the river early in the morning. He wanted to cross it, so he got into the boat and pushed it into the water with the rows. He used the skills that he had learned over the past few days and with minor difficulty, steered the boat in the flowing river. Finally, he made it to the other side. He got off the boat and it was a beautiful sight. Mountains, valleys, cliffs, and frozen lakes were to be seen. There was a big forest. There were also many animals like hares, rabbits, cats, and many more. This was it- Raman’s dream had come true.
