Sunshine In Forest

Once upon a time, there was a dark, deep, and dense forest. Since the Sun never bestowed its grace over there, it was always dark and cold.

A clever fox named Foxy lived there. He always thought about how to get the Sun to shine in his forest. But it was impossible to get the Sun. One day, when he was sleeping, he had a peculiar dream. A dream that gave him an idea! He began to feel excited and joyful.

In a forest meeting, Foxy the Fox suggested his idea, ‘Listen! I have a peculiar plan. First, we’ll all bring ropes and tie them together to form a long rope. Then, the birds will fly and tie it to the Sun. Finally, we’ll pull the Sun and our forest will be no longer dark!’

‘But,’ said Grizzly the bear, ‘Where will we bring ropes from? How will we pull such a heavy star?’ Everyone was disappointed. They were impatiently waiting for the forest to shine, but now, there was no hope.

Foxy shouted in a hurry, ’I am coming in a few minutes! Stay where you are!’ He fled to a nearby village and explained to the villagers their problem. He asked them to help him. The villagers agreed. They went to the forest led by Foxy and together they pulled the Sun.

The forest was shiny and warm now. The animals praised Foxy the Fox for his cleverness and thanked the villagers. Now, because of Foxy, that forest is no longer dark!

Dutch Winter

It was one cold, blistery, chilling winter morning in a little Dutch village called Zaanse Chaans. There lived a family with twin boys aged eleven called Andrew and Joseph.

It was time to go to school and their mother was having a tough time waking up the boys in that shivering cold weather. Alas! She managed. They got dressed in all the layers of winter clothing with stockings, woolen socks, snow boots, sweaters, woolen mufflers, gloves, and caps to survive their long walk to school.

The sun seemed to be playing hide and seek with the clouds and the fog. They crossed a line of pine trees, black and pointy against the sky along the street. Their feet crunched over the snow which had turned into sleet during the night.

Suddenly, it happened! They heard a scream, Joseph and their mother looked back shocked to see that Andrew had slipped and was in great pain. They rushed to him and mother realized that it was a bad fall. She immediately called an ambulance to rush him to the hospital.

The doctor at the hospital told them that it was a fracture in his right ankle and he was plastered up for six weeks. Poor Andrew cried and sobbed in pain and his mother was very upset too. If only somebody had followed the rule and sprinkled salt on the street outside their house, this deadly fall would have been avoided. But finally, after the six weeks were over, Andrew’s plaster came off and he was able to walk comfortably and independently again.

Then started the fun of playing in the snow, making snowballs, snowmen, etc. And they lived happily ever after.
